Five todos when your flight is delayed. Again

Reading a good book is a good choice

July 2016. In the last two months, I had two of my top worst flights ever. Ok, the night in which one of the passengers got arrested in front of me as soon as I set foot in the airport, maybe, that was a bit worst. Anyway, a flight cancelled in the middle of the stormy Brexit night, its substitute delayed for more than two hours, and another flight delayed with a funny on and off the plane of the whole group of passengers, their bags, suitcase, backpack and everything. These two are the last experiences that inspired me for this list on how to happily survive the waste of time associated with you sitting in an airport waiting for some mysterious force to bring you home. So this is my very own personal list. Feel free to add your point…

  1. Reading. A good book is always a solution. But when I am too tired for reading also a magazine is of some help. My favourite is internazionale.it especially for Rob Brezny Horoscope that usually gives me good hopes and great expectations about the future. Last time I found “The glamour list about 13 thoughts we have in the shower” quite funny (August 2016).
  2. Eating. That cannot be so easy. Especially if your only choice is between healthy veggie food or greasy cheesy hamburger. And you would like something that is just good comfort food for cheering you up a bit. Without spending too much.
  3. Drinking. Easier than eating. “Alcohol is never the answer… But it certainly helps you forget the question” someone said. Ok, but be careful: too drinking and few eating could cause some anti-social behaviour like singing loud or snoring like a pig. And it could be embarrassing when you finally succeed in getting on the plane.
  4. Chatting. The agreeability of this activity strongly depends on your neighbours. But I have to admit I have a positive attitude to think that everyone has an interesting story that is worth listening. For instance, last time I met two newlyweds on their honeymoon first night. How romantic to be stuck for 5 hours in Gatwick on a plane with other 150 neurotic passengers. Anyway, the bride was lovely and she told me about her country of origin (so I learnt where Uzbekistan is located) and about Kew Gardens where I will go for sure next time I am in London. Other encounters were less enjoyable, but always interesting.
  5. Shopping. I have to admit that this could be dangerous for your credit card. Sometimes, at least for me, this activity also put me in the risk of missing my flight. Nonetheless, a nice yellow bag was worth it.

So, what’s your favourite activity when you’re stuck in an airport?
